Our History

Serving Waterford and the South East since the 18th Century, R. Thompson is one of Ireland’s oldest businesses.

Built on on a reputation of personal, sensitive and dignified service, the business has been in the Thompson Family since Robert Thompson took over the Barrack Street premises in 1786 following the death of his father-in-law, Patrick Harrington. Current proprietor, John is the Great, Great Grandson of Robert Thompson.

A long association with Waterford’s best known religious order

Situated adjacent to the home of the Christian Brothers, the business has a long association with the order, having conducted the funeral for its founder, Edmund, Ignatius Rice.

The funeral arrangements of Edmund Ignatius Rice, the founder of the Christian Brothers were made by Mr. Harrington, 19 Barrack Street at this own expense. Firstly as a tribute to Brother Rice and secondly because he feared the monks may not have the money to cover the expense.
